Delete array values vba

An array, like a variable is a somewhere to store data. An array can however hold more than one value, for example an entire database of information with tens of thousands of records. Using arrays in your procedures makes your code potentially quicker than alternative methods for say performing calculations on large datasets or transferring information from one sheet to another.

You declare arrays in a similar way to the way you declare variables. When you declare an array you also state the number of elements that the array will contain. The MyArray array contains six elements — yes six not five: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. So by default the array index starts at zero. If you need the index count to start at 1, type Option Base 1 at the top of the module before an procedures. You can also specify the number of elements in an array by declaring its lower and upper bounds.

For example. Each element in an array is like a pocket that you can store a separate piece of information in. If you are going to store the same type of data long, integer, string etc in each element then state that data type when you declare the array.

If different types of data are going to be stored in different elements use Variant as your data type.

The previous examples involved one dimensional arrays, equivalent to a single row or column of values. If you need to store a table of data you would need a two dimensional array as tables are made up of rows and columns.

If you had a cube of data then you would require three dimensions. Luckily arrays are not restricted to single dimension, in fact an array can include up to sixty dimensions that takes some thinking to visualise! This array is equivalent to a table containing ten rows and five columns. It contains fifty elements. You can reference each element in an array using its index number. For example to assign a value to an element…. Using this method there is no need to declare the number of elements that the array will need to include.

This would return the value 10, which is in the fifth row first dimension and second column second dimension of the array. The ReDim statement allows you to redimension an array. In the example below we have added another row of data to the worksheet array and assigned values to each element in that new row. When you ReDim you erase all values currently stored in the array.

That is unless you use the keyword Preserve. Preserve howevers adds another problem — when using it you can you can only resize the last dimension of the array. As we want to resize the first dimension ie add rows we need to transpose the data so it is held in the array as a horizontal table.

This is easily achieved as shown below. The Locals window shows the new values have been successfully assigned to the new elements in our array.

The LBound and Ubound functions return the starting and ending index number for a specified array dimension. In this example the LBound and Ubound functions are used to display the first and last index number for each dimension in our array. We will also see the practical example for deleting the duplicates from an array. This will help you to know how to delete duplicate records from an array using VBA. In this method we will first get the data to Excel worksheet and remove the duplicate using RemoveDuplicates method and reload into the Array.

This VBA macro will create a temporary sheet. And enter the data from array to temporary worksheet. Then remove the duplicate records. And again reload the unique items into array.

Finally it deletes the temporary worksheet. Now you can observe that the duplicate items are deleted from the array. Dim recCountAfter As Long. Dim arrTargetArray As Variant.

What is a Project?Copy, paste, cut, delete, insert is some of the common operations used to perform in excel. The easy method to do this is, using the shortcut keys or built-in functions. But when you want to perform the operation in a single click or automatically, VBA is the solution. We can automate these tasks using excel macros. VBA also provides different methods similar to excel functions.

This performs these tasks smoothly in VBA. Columns delete method is used to delete single or multiple columns in Excel VBA. The delete property of columns is used along with column index. Watch our Demo Courses and Videos. From an attendance database, the office leaving time for some employees are given.

Step 1: So first we can create a simple function as dele since the delete is a keyword which is not preferred. Another easy method to perform the deletion is specifying the column reference by alphabetical order. In the same table if you want to delete more than one column then the column range should be specified.

In the above example, we did not mention a worksheet name, if the workbook contains more than one sheet then the worksheet name should be specified then only the code will perform the proper action. The two sheets contain the details of employees for two months Jan and Feb.

Since the same worksheet have more than one sheet to avoid errors better to specify the sheet name. Monday, Tuesday will be deleted from the table. The range object also used to delete a column in VBA instead of column delete. If the range object is used the code will look as below.

Here we discussed how to Delete Column in Excel using VBA along with practical examples and downloadable excel template. Your email address will not be published. Forgot Password? An Eweek. Value - thus the first element is the Row, and the second element are the columns. I want to delete rows from the array ie. This new array will then be written to a new excel workbook. Some of you might say do it in excel first, but I need to manipulate the data first which may change a row from deletable to not deletable, and vice-versa - manipualtionwhich cant be done in excel.

Options to delete When the row is deleted I want all the rows below to be moved up to fill the space thus the array gets smaller. Code something like Any help there please, thanks? Oh, It's VB6 by the way. Because you're creating the array from a Range, and I would presume putting it back the same way, you can't really change the dimensions from Row,Column to Column,Row. The only option that leaves is to transform the array.

The idea would be to gather the array as normal, transform it, do your processing, transform it back, then send it back to Excel. To keep it efficient, you keep track of the "insertion point" with a pointer and go through the array, moving rows up as needed. Once you've gone through the array, ReDim Preserve. However I am getting a Subscript out of range message on the last line of the ProcessArry sub.

I cant quite make it out why?? I have double-checked that the same array that goes into the transform is the one that goes into the process. So - either the transform isnt working or I'm calling it incorrectly I've already done the file data manipulation I've debug printed the array and changes are correct I then am simply doing this TransformArray vrarry01 'We now transform the array rows to cols ProcessArray vrarry01 'We delete the unwanted rows TransformArray vrarry01 'We transform it back then go-on to write the array back to excel Am I being to simplistic?

Nope, that is exactly how the solution is intended to work. Weird that it's not transposing, thanks westconn, I knew I was using the wrong word but not altogether surprising.

I wrote it freehand without testing. I'll test it a little later this morning and try to figure out what's going on. I didnt want to hassle you or be pushy, So I have left it a fair while. Why not? Rows If Trim aRow. Copy Sheet2. Thanks Sorry, got super busy early in the month then forgot all about it.

Does anhn's suggestion work for you? That Macro works on my test file with regarding to deleting the unwanted rows thank you anhn. Couple of problems though.

VBA Tip: Delete an array

I have LOT of files and putting that macro in against each file will take a long time. I now consider this problem solved - though I am not sure how I flag it so. You can add and remove array elements in different ways. Unfortunately there is not a simple Array. Instead of a delete method, the JavaScript array has a variety of ways you can clean array values.

You can remove elements from the end of an array using pop, from the beginning using shift, or from the middle using splice. The JavaScript Array filter method to create a new array with desired items, a more advanced way to remove unwanted elements.

There are different methods and techniques you can use to remove elements from JavaScript arrays:. You will also learn some other ways you can remove elements from an array that may not be so obvious, like with LoDash. JavaScript Array elements can be removed from the end of an array by setting the length property to a value less than the current value.

Any element whose index is greater than or equal to the new length will be removed. The pop method removes the last element of the array, returns that element, and updates the length property.

The pop method modifies the array on which it is invoked, This means unlike using delete the last element is removed completely and the array length reduced. The shift method works much like the pop method except it removes the first element of a JavaScript array instead of the last. There are no parameters since the shift method only removed the first array element. When the element is removed the remaining elements are shifted down.

Excel VBA – Storing Data in Arrays & Dynamic Arrays

The shift method returns the element that has been removed, updates the indexes of remaining elements, and updates the length property. It modifies the array on which it is invoked. The splice method can be used to add or remove elements from an array. The first argument specifies the location at which to begin adding or removing elements. The second argument specifies the number of elements to remove. The third and subsequent arguments are optional; they specify elements to be added to the array.

Here we use the splice method to remove two elements starting from position three zero based index :. An array containing the removed elements is returned by the splice method. You can see the removed array contains [3, 4] and the original array contains the remaining values.

If you know the value you want to remove from an array you can use the splice method. First you must identify the index of the target item. You then use the index as the start element and remove just one element. This is a simple example where the elements are integers. If you have an array of objects you would need a more sophisticated routine.

Obs mac high cpu

This works if you only want to remove a single item. If you want to remove multiple items that match your criteria there is a glitch. As the items are removed from the array the index still increments and the next item after your matched value is skipped.

The simple solution is to modify the above example to decrement the index variable so it does not skip the next item in the array. In the modified example I added 2 additional 5 values to the array.By using our site, you acknowledge that you have read and understand our Cookie PolicyPrivacy Policyand our Terms of Service. What about just getting rid of duplicates? This post contains 2 examples. I like the 2nd one:. There's no built-in functionality to remove duplicates from arrays. Raj's answer seems elegant, but I prefer to use dictionaries. EDIT: d. Keys is a Variant array, not a Collection. I have created much more thorough benchmarks. First of all, as ChaimG pointed out, early binding makes a big difference I originally used eksortso's code above verbatim which uses late binding.

Secondly, my original benchmarks only included the time to create the unique object, however, it did not test the efficiency of using the object. My point in doing this is, it doesn't really matter if I can create an object really fast if the object I create is clunky and slows me down moving forward.

It turns out that looping over a collection can be quite efficient if you know how to do it I didn't. As ChaimG yet againpointed out in the comments, using a For Each construct is ridiculously superior to simply using a For loop. It is now a meager 0. For the Collection method there are two times.

Remove Empty array items in Excel VBA

The first my original benchmark Collection1 show the time to create the unique object. The second part Collection2 shows the time to loop over the object which is very natural to create a returnable array as the other functions do. Hi Peter, MyArr got populated from a string and then I performed an operation which compared this array with another array and delete out the common characters. So I was left with this array which has some elements populated and some elements empty. So need to get rid of the empty elements and have an array that has only the filled elements.

Thanks for your help.
